How does elevating the modules
above the roof as the SWIF system does impact the wind load on the building and on the PV system itself?
The effects of the elevated panels on the lateral force resisting system of the building are small. For most buildings, the additional lateral force on the building due to wind is less than 10%. Per IBC chapter 34, alterations resulting in an increased lateral demand of under 10% do not require further study or upgrades. So globally, most buildings are not impacted significantly enough to require structural upgrades to their lateral system.
The effects of localized loading on roof members does need to be considered. Per IBC chapter 34, alterations resulting in an increased gravity demand of 5% on any member requires study or upgrades. Point loading due to a combination of wind and snow loads from the elevated panels needs to be evaluated for all supporting roof members.
