Overview
The building had an existing multi-layer PVC membrane roof over 3" of polyiso insulation. The roof was scheduled to be removed and recycled, and an additional 3.5" of insulation installed along with a new 60 mil PVC roof. The roof structure consists of metal decking supported by zee-purlins and steel building frames. The purlins are spaced at 4'-9" on center, running in the north-south direction and the building frames run east-west and are spaced 30' on center. The rooftop has sparse mechanical units and vents.
Design Development + Installation
Sunbreak Energy developed a PV panel layout and system specification designed to meet the client's energy goals. Using the panel type and locations outlined in this report—along with historical construction documents supplied by the building owner and verified with the on-site facilities manager—Grummel Engineering worked with SWIF Rack to develop a racking configuration featuring 14'-3" spans that could be supported by the building’s existing structural capacity without modifications.
Onsite work was performed by Competitive Commercial Roofing, who replaced the roof and installed the racking, and Sunworks Solar. Competitive Commercial Roofing took advantage of the roofing product manufacturer's state of the art technology to have custom boots fabricated for the SWIF Stanchion penetrations, simplifying and speeding up their installation process. Likewise, Sunworks Solar took advantage of the PV system's elevation to mount the inverters on the back of the racks, under the shelter of the panels, for a tidy and low-maintenance approach.
